VISUALS:

Graphics are alright. They're not necessarily anything to write home about. I really liked the forest area and the castle throne-room, and a few other details. Not sure how I feel about the characters themselves. I will say, whatever this is worth, that the game looks better in motion than it does in the screenshots, however.

GAMEPLAY:

I hope you like hitting things. Because that's what you'll be doing a lot in this game. Hitting things, with weapons. In a brawling real-time battle system. As far as I can tell, you can only hit enemies from the side. but some of them, at least, can hit you from all four directions. Not fun; this battle system lost some discretion points from me there.

The battles also lose some discretion from me for the fact that the first one is one with two 30 HP bats (if you play, you'll understand why that's bad) and you have no weapons yet. Once you get your first weapon, battles get substantially easier. I might just suck at fighting but some of the fights are more frustrating than challenging.

MUSIC/SOUND:

The battle music is a joke. At least, I hope it was, because it wasn't really that awesome. And in some areas it seems to carry over to exploration. Not cool. Most of the sound effects and other music are tolerable at the least, though, and the battle music grew on me, a little.

TECHNICAL:

Navigation of menus and text-boxes pretty easy, which is a plus. A couple of the text-boxes seem to freeze-up, sort of. I broke out of one of them by holding space and pressing a button to walk away.

I'm unsure if some of the timings in battle are intentional or just bad choices. Sometimes it seems just a little too difficult to hit things. Also, and I guess this is somewhat to be expected, but it
seems like anything resembling a "tie" results in my being hurt, and the enemies, well, not.

I am however still fairly impressed by the game as a technical accomplishment, because it was written before I had MZX on a computer with a soundcard, which means it was way back in the 90's and everything was overlay and robots, no sprites yet. That means that most of the battle visuals and everything else were definitely awesome for their time, or at least took a highly respectable amount of effort that a similar battle system wouldn't necessarily take today. Oddly enough, had Zoox 1 and 2 had sprites to work with, I could have seen their game being both technically better and more easily playable.

STORY:

What's there in this chapter is fairly decent and made me care a little bit. Writing's a bit off at times, though. If the next chapters had ever gotten finished, I could definitely see myself playing on to see what was coming next.

OVERALL:

I have mixed feelings about this game. I like it, but it's not as cool as it was when I first played it way back when. I highly recommend giving it a play. I don't feel like I should give it more than three stars, but I kind of want to.
