MegaMan: Gears is a decently executed Mega Man clone that fails in its over-reliance on MZX built-in mechanics.

Despite what the disclaimer at the start says, the jumping engine is fine, except for the fact that the shooting is built-in MZX shooting, which causes the player's horizontal movement to come to a dead halt when say, firing in mid-air, over a wide open pit. Fortunately, due to a bug, you can jump off of pits and stay alive. The areas above doorways are customfloors, and in at least one spot in the Wind level, you can walk in them. Pick-ups rely on the player touching them horizontally, and can be walked on top of (this isn't a problem going up though). The wind gear can easily be defeated by shooting it from behind when it's at ground level, as it interrupts the robot's routine with the :SHOT label.

The levels are nicely designed for the most part. I loved the lunar level! The wind level had some garish color choices, unfortunately, but was still fun to play through. There are even flying light bug things that reduce the color intensity when you shoot them, making it impossible to see the death pits for a short period of time (ffffff).

The lunar boss was pretty annoying, and it's hard to tell how much Wind ammo you have left (the W menu doesn't help or let you actually select the weapons, you have to press A). Save up Wind ammo and only use it on the boss when you know it will hit, because the default bullets Mega Buster is almost useless against it. After it reaches about 1/2 health, it starts fading the screen out entirely, which is really annoying and should have been changed to just fading it really dark!

Overall, this is a game I would have played to completion, if it were complete, and might have even given it 4 stars in that case, if some of the shoddy aspects had been addressed. Nice job...
